Every honest conversation about basement waterproofing starts here. Exterior waterproofing digs down to the footings and stops water before it ever touches the wall. Interior waterproofing accepts that water will reach the wall and gives it a controlled path out — into a drain, into a sump, out of the house.
Why most homeowners choose interior anyway. The price gap is the whole story. Interior methods average around $3,000 against roughly $7,000 for exterior (This Old House, Mar 2026), and full exterior jobs run $10,000–$15,000+ because nearly all of them require heavy machinery, excavation, and then restoring the landscaping you just destroyed (HomeGuide, Feb 2026).
And it works. Relieving hydrostatic pressure is a legitimate engineering solution, not a compromise. A properly installed interior drainage system handles the pressure that causes most wet basements — it just does it by redirecting water rather than resisting it.
The one situation where interior is wrong: when the water is damaging the foundation itself from outside — chronic saturation, a wall already moving, or a house where the exterior is being dug up anyway for other work. Then you are managing a symptom while the wall keeps taking the load.

Why “interior waterproofing” costs $3,000 and $18,000.
Both numbers are honestly reported. This Old House puts interior methods at an average of about $3,000 (Mar 2026). HomeGuide puts a full interior waterproofing job at $6,000–$18,000 (Feb 2026).
The difference is scope, not honesty. “Interior waterproofing” spans a $400 tube-and-brush job and a full perimeter drainage system with a sump on a 1,400 sq ft basement. Averaging them produces a number that describes nobody’s basement.
So do this instead of comparing to an average: make the contractor list which rows in the table above are in the quote. A quote of $9,000 that includes perimeter drainage, a sump, and slab reinstatement is a real price. A quote of $9,000 for sealant and a dehumidifier is not.
And factor in your basement’s condition. Fixr notes that finished basements always cost more to waterproof, because the drywall and flooring have to come out before the work and go back afterwards (Feb 2026).
